Is there a list of herbs or formulas you shouldn’t tincture? For instance, I know that the pre-biotic powder should be taken as a powder, not as a tincture or tea, due to the the soluable fiber needing to do it’s job.

I’ve heard some say that certain herbs shouldn’t be tinctured, if the minerals are the main benefit.

I mainly tincture things, so they have a longer shelf life, but I don’t want to tincture things I shouldn’t.

If anyone has any guidance on this, I’d really appreciate it!

Hi Rebecca.  I’ve heard that tincturing Big Sagebrush,  or Artemisia tridentata has levels of thujone.  Can be harmful.

Very good question – let’s hope Doc Jones will chime in with a list!  I have alot of herbs that are aging that I need to tincture, but like Rebecca, I don’t want to waste them if tincturing isn’t the best answer.  Thanks in advance Doc!

I know there are herbs like stinging nettle that give you different results as a tea then a tincture.  I think that is what you are asking…the one is nutritive for the minerals and the other more for allergy help, etc.   There are also herbs that don’t help much as a tincture and work better as a tea…I think boneset was one?  I don’t know of a list though.

Good question! I keep wondering along these lines, about Oatstraw tincture particularly… Is the calming effect not merely because of the minerals in there? How does a tincture help here? Hope Doc Jones will shed some light on this! 🙂

That’s a good question, what are some ways to know if an herb should not be tinctured or is better tinctured.

Bumping a very good question – let’s hope Doc Jones will chime in with a list! I also have a lot of herbs that are aging that I need to tincture, but like Rebecca, I don’t want to waste the alcohol or the herbs if tincturing isn’t the best answer. Thanks in advance Doc!
