My name is Cheryl and I live in Cache Valley, UT. I guess I could say my love for plants has developed over the last ten years. I loved science growing up but did everything I could to stay out of Botany classes. I hated learning about plants! In fact I came from a medical family and any alternative medicine was frowned on.

Fast forward many years later….my sister came down with chronic fatigue and went to many doctors eventually finding help with alternative medicine. She had talked to me about alternative medicine but all I could think of was my Grandfather telling us “those people are quacks.”

The Lord decided he needed to hit me over the head so after 15 years of chronic infections/abscesses in my arm pit I received 3 options from the dermatologist. 1. Have the glands (Think it was gland not lymph nodes) under by arm surgically removed 2. Go on Accutaine (Spelling may be wrong but the medicine they prescribe for serious acne which has terrible side effects) 3. Go on antibiotics for the rest of my life (at this point I was already allergic to penicillin and celphlosporin) All and all not good choices. Then my sister said she had read an article that antiperspirant blocks pores and may cause breast cancer. Block pores? Maybe the infection can’t get out… could it be that easy? So I stopped using antiperspirants and the infections when away. You could say I was hooked on alternative medicine and never looked back.

I have 10 children and 20 grandchildren. Like so many of you I have felt the urgent need to learn everything I can about herbal medicine particularly using local plants. Also feel strongly there will come a time – soon – that either Western medicine will not be available or be to expensive. I’ve had dreams using plants to heal people (anyone know what to use Artemisia tridentata for?) I know the plants I am suppose to use but not what to use it for. Teasel has “call to me” also (Thank you Dr. Jones for your story, I thought I was going crazy!). I love making herbal remedies and learning everything I can about herbs. I guess you could say I have been given a new perspective/mission in life. I am a “herb nerd”!

Thanks for the intro Cheryl. Artemisia tridentata (Sage brush) has several good medicinal uses. I see you started a thread in the medicinal plants section on it.

As for talking to teasel, I find it to be pretty chatty stuff…not as chatty as Calendula (which sometimes fibs and rarely says anything important) but still pretty sociable for as prickly as it is. By the way, nothing you said rules out the possibility that you might be going crazy. 😉

Yes, some plants are quite nice, others are pushy (bordering on down right rude :irked: ), while others are social outcasts for no fault of their own 😥 (one comes to mind, but Patrick knows which one).

I’m not making friends with chaparral no matter how nice you say it is.

Maybe I am going crazy because I made Chaparral salve and I love it for deep stubborn infections, so I am thinking of making friends with Chaparral. I am growing quite fond of its distinctive smell and have happy memories of collecting it. Being honest though, it did not carry on a conversation with me. Is it just unsociable, or was it mad I was there collecting it?
