On Thursday, while wrapping things up at work, the next shift came in. One of the guys was talking about how he had a tooth that was bugging him for quite some time and could not afford to have it pulled. So he took things into his own hands, LITERALLY. He got a pair of vice grips and had the supervisor latch on and pull it out. He indicated that the tooth no longer hurt (no kidding) but that he had a terrible headache.

I asked him what he was doing as far as cleaning and such. He indicated that he was using a salt water rinse. Better than nothing. When we went back into town I brought him a tea of two parts Oregon Grape Root and 1 part Comfry. I told him to rinse and swallow with about 4 oz of this every few hours until it was gone.

When he came in the next day he told me that his headache disappeared and that he had slept about 10 hours. I cannot say for sure, but I am thinking that whatever was getting at the tooth was also causing some sort of infection elsewhere and the the OGR knocked it out.

At least that is MY story and I am sticking to it.

Long story short, another person helped with Home Grown Herbalism.

          Good call.

Dental infections can cause havoc all over the body. It’s very easy for bacteria to get directly into the blood stream that way.

I read a fairly alarming article not long ago about root canals causing all kinds of serious health problems even years later as it’s pretty difficult to actually kill the bacteria. The author contended that the bugs remained in the tooth socket and seeded the blood causing all kinds of problems. Many people have apparently had serious, inexplicable health problems resolve spontaneously when they have their root canal teeth pulled.

I am wondering if anti microbial herbal treatments might not be able to penetrate and get to those nasties. One that come immediately to mind would be CHAPARRAL. Would hit those buggers from all sorts of different angles.

            Rinse, swish and swallow.

I imagine there might be others that could get up under the gums and also attack from within the body as well.

The problem with post-root canal infections is that there isn’t much circulation to the area. It is a dead spot for all intents and purposes. So, anything blood-borne whether it be herbal constituents or antibiotics can’t be delivered to the area of the problem.

Jerry, that all depends on what the conditions you are fighting off are. The treatment I provided for my co worker were to help specifically with the huge hole in he mouth that was left by the vacated tooth. If your pain is from decay, that would be a different matter to address.

Yarrow root and clove have been touted as dental pain relievers. I do not have personal experience with that though. I have read, but do not remember, about certain herbs that are said to stop and even reverse the decay process.

Maybe Patrick can address this a bit more.

Yarrow root and cloves are both good for dental pain. They’re used topically. I’ve stopped some really serious dental pain with them. The effect is strictly local anesthesia. You still need to get the underlying problem addressed.

Getting new recruits to chew yarrow roots on campouts is an old boy scout trick. The kids spend the rest of the day with numb mouths. 🙂

Should work for teething babies as well then.

Haven’t tried it for that but it ought to be perfect. Just grind the fresh root into a paste and rub it on the lil’ gummers.

What herbs would you recommend for reversing tooth decay and healing cavities?

Mix some horsetail with your toothpaste.
