Dr Jones in the “how to grow herbs” videos you mention honeysuckle as a herb but i can find no reference anywhere else. Can you tell me what it is used for. You mentioned the flower as the medicine. I have a massive vine that i am constantly cutting back.. much to the hummingbirds dismay! Thanks

I’ve used Lonicera japonica, Japanese honeysuckle. Other Lonicera are also medicinal. Lonicera tatarica (Tatar honeysuckle),  has been used as a remedy for respiratory infections, fever, digestive problems, and skin diseases. Some studies have also found that it has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties.

I should do a lesson on honeysuckles.

So do you harvest the flower? The leaves? The hummingbirds would be ticked off if I did but I can use the ones they are done with.

I’ve always used the flowers. They say the leaf on L. japonica is good too, but I’ve never used it and don’t know if that’s the case for all species. I know the Lonicera tatarica flower is good as well.

When harvesting the flowers, be sure to remove the humming birds from the flower first. Hummingbirds aren’t medicinal.

Honeysuckle berries a little toxic. Don’t use those for anything.
