StudentCan anyone point me to resources for researching the medicinal uses of honeysuckle? I have looked in all my books and it is mentioned in only one and very briefly at that. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

StudentI’ve been wondering the same thing since I moved last year to Georgia.
According to Coreypine Shane in “Southeast Medicinal Plants”, it is a powerful antiviral for flu and colds. He writes that in TCM, honeysuckle (vine and flower) is used to “clear heat” or fight infection and that in some ways, it is the “echinacea of Chinese medicine”, with the buds being the strongest part. Uses include treating the onset of head colds, influenza, sinus infections, ear infections, and sore throats. Also a mild anti-inflammatory. Other uses include treating diarrhea and dysentery by killing the microbes that are causing digestive upset, and topically for sores, accesses, ulcerations, warts, and other acute skin conditions.
Common forms of preparation include dry flower tea or fresh flower tincture or glycerite.
Hope some that that is helpful! This is one plant I would like to use more!

Homestead InstructorThere are a lot of research studies on Google Scholar:

I have grown it and it’s a beautiful plant. It has good properties for respiratory viruses particularly.
I’ll put it on my list of plants to do a good monograph on. :0)

StudentWhat about the twin bract honeysuckle – Lonicera involucrata? Unless someone can tell me a reason to keep it, it’s plot will be reassigned.

Homestead InstructorLonicera involucrata was used medicinally by Native Americans but it really isn’t used much currently in modern herbalism.
If I were going to choose a honeysuckle, I’d get a Japanese (Lonicera japonica). Lots more research on that one.
