My 74 yo mama has a chest contusion (bruised rib area) and I’d like to make her some strong pain killing lotion or salve to put on there.

I once tried some thc/cbd lotion (it’s legal here) when my hands were aching and it worked pretty good (although it wore off pretty quick) so I was thinking maybe hops would be a good place to start?

Which leads to my next questions.

Because hops is in the cannibas family I assume it’s fairly resinous- would it even extract in the oil double boiler? If I mix it with vodka first in the blender and then add the oil till warm where does the alcohol go? Will it still make a salve? Does it matter that my double boiler is COPPER?

Also what other herbs would you recommend using TOPICALLY for extreme tenderness/pain
        Thank you in advance,
        Jen

Doc has a blog post I believe where he talks about using hops (tincture if I remember correctly)  on a sore tendon in his hand from excessive writing (typing?). So I made some tincture and infused some sesame oil for massage. Works great on my sore tendons and on my elderly father’s sore knees.

To make Hops infused oil or the tincture, you use the strobiles. Since  they look like flowers (and are quite aromatic), they do just fine when chopped up and infused into oil or alcohol !

I almost always just use tinctures topically for pain. It’s easy and quick.

Hops is great. You might also look at the Rest Easy formula (Valerian, skullcap and chamomile equal parts) topically. That’s a good one for pain too. Have a look at the pain management lessons. Lots of great stuff there.

That said, you can certainly do any of the above as a lotion if you like as well. But it’ll have a much shorter shelf life and, frankly won’t work as quickly as a tincture topically. We sell amber bottles and spray tops on the website.

Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

Thanks for the speedy reply. How long does the relief from a single tincture last? I have been all through the pain section, but I will do it again, and probably again after that lol until it’s forever burned in my brain! Lol anyhow can you please tell me how you would go about making a lotion from hops if someone wanted to? Inquiring minds want to know, and it’ll bother me more than it should not knowing the best way smh…Im overly analytical, and this will be burning in my brain at 2am.
