StudentGood evening, Doc Jones.
Are there times when women come to you with hormone imbalance symptoms but are already on HRT (synthetic or bioidentical) but need more help with menopausal symptoms? Are there herbs that you would feel comfortable mixing with estradiol/progesterone? Many women are committed to their HRT and also (I’m a pharmacist) I don’t have the legal authority to advise getting off of a medication when that person is under the care of a prescriber.
My instinct is to to care for detox organs–especially liver, kidney and intestines with herbal therapy and perhaps stay away from herbs that contain phyto-estrogen or progesterone.
Thank you, Doc. I love all that I’m learning and am so thankful to be able to learn from you.

StudentPerhaps address the adrenal system. It is supposed to take over hormone production when the ovaries are done. If adrenals improve at the task, theoretically there’s less need for external intervention.

StudentWhat about women with surgical Menopause that want to get off bio identical hormones, what would you advice to take? Where can on get a good wild yam cream for the progesterone? I want to continue with blood work for hormones to see how herbs are helping and if need to be increased, But really want to get off bio identical, plus what are the ingredients of them ( bio identical) and can they have side effects? Good info Dee on the adrenal system. Can one take adrenal support with thyroid support for hypothyroidism?

StudentTopic AuthorGood morning, Kim.
Surgical menopause would be treated like natural menopause. Getting off of bio-identicals can be challenging or some women depending on the dose–the higher the dose, the longer it will take to taper off. Your doctor should help you with a taper schedule, creams will be easier to adjust than other forms like patches.
Doing blood work can be helpful, but inconvenient and costly to do every few months to see what’s going on. I think it is just as important (maybe more!) to go off of symptoms. You know your own body and how you are feeling.
The adrenal and thyroid support question is an interesting one. Chronically high adrenal stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline will negatively affect thyroid hormone production, as will high estrogen that is not balanced by enough progesterone. Thyroid gland production can be improved by lowering estrogen (progesterone is protective), so if you taper off of bio-identical estradiol and start off with adrenal support, you may see thyroid improving. Aviva Romm has a book, “The Adrenal Thyroid Revolution”, that gives a protocol to deal with both systems. I hope this helps!

StudentDoc has tutorials on making lotions and balms, you can make your own wild yam cream. Commercial formulations are available at the big online retailers, but I made it to avoid their soy oil.
