I have an indoor dog who is constantly scratching herself and rubbing up against furniture and even laying on her back and wiggling around trying to get relief from itchiness. Bathing her more or less frequently hasn’t made a difference, she doesn’t have fleas or anything, and she has been recently wormed. Any ideas?

Itchy dogs can be challenging to manage with herbs. The itching is almost always due to an allergy and the kids are often allergic to the herbs as well.

Itching is caused by an overload of histamines on the system. Since the liver is the organ that processes histamines, supporting the liver can often diminish allergy symptoms. Herbs like burdock, dandelion root, oregon grape and milk thistle help in some cases.

Brigham tea actually is an anti-histamine so it can be useful in some allergy cases as well. I haven’t used it on dogs, but people who use it daily report decreased allergy symptoms.

I developed a formula for Silver lining herbs (All-R-G support) that has the following plants in it:

Astragalus, Bilberry, Bupleurum, Burdock, Chamomile, Cleavers, Nettle, Oregon Grape, Red Clover, Rehmania, Sarsparilla and Licorice.

It works well on some dogs but, as I said, many of the dogs are also allergic to the herbs so show no improvement.

Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.
