Studentare the spices you purchase at the grocery store (most commonly in your spice drawer) still medicinal or do those need to be home grown? Also are herbs and vegetables grown in containers still beneficial nutritionally and medicinally or do they need to be in the ground?

StudentYou probably aren’t going to get much medicine out of the spices you get at the grocery store as who knows how long they’ve been there and what their harvesting process was (like did they dry it at really hot temps and burn off the medicine?) so you are going to have much more success medicinally with things you grow. Yeah herbs and vegetables grown in containers can still be nutritional, however it’s good to know what things have deep roots, like comfrey, that might not do well in a container. However I wouldn’t hesitate to grow things like peppermint in a container

StudentTopic Authorthank you, i thought that may be the case, but also thought i should ask as i just went through both kitchen modules and Doc didn’t indicate so i was a bit hopeful of the spices in my drawer already. your responses are always so helpful, how long have you been students of Doc Jones?

StudentThe front of our house faces southwest so I have a perfect window to grow herbs over the winter. I bought some smallish grey pots from Walmart, and planted thyme, basil, parsley and oregano. I put plastic wrap over the top until the seed germinated. I have already cut them once and used the herbs in cooking, creams, and salves. This morning, I planted rosemary and I plan to add catnip to my window collection. Thanks for your blog!
