Hi JF369,
There isn’t any red clover or licorice in the Mellow Mommy formula. The formula is:
Mellow Mommy
1 Alfalfa
2 Burdock
2 Lemon Balm
2 Oat Straw
1 Raspberry Leaf
1 Skullcap
The old formula you’re referring to was changed some time ago. I looked on the website and found the list you’re referring to in the product description. I’ve corrected it there.
As we were doing the research on Pregnancy and lactation safe herbs (See the first lesson in the Individual Plants section) I found one of source (in a chorus of opinions to the contrary) that said licorice and red clover should theoretically be avoided during lactation…just in case. Because the source (Aviva Romm, MD) is someone for whom I have respect and because we’re dealing with babies, I pulled licorice and red clover from the formula. Do I think they were dangerous? No, I don’t. In a formula with that many herbs the levels would be low enough to be irrelevant in the milk. The reason I took them out is that when it comes to babies born or unborn, I choose to err on the side of safety. The other reason is that there are plenty of other herbs that can do what I wanted to do in that formula with zero concerns or controversy.
Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.
