StudentJust started the Leaky Gut cleanse (?) fromHomegrown Herbalist. I’ve had chronic acid reflux and food intolerances since I was 20, hopefully this will help.

StudentI’m with you Cara. I think you just wrote my story 🙁 Sorry for both of us, but I’m banking on this being the right place for our improvement (if not total cure). Nice to “meet you”!

StudentTopic AuthorNice to meet you 🙂 Food intolerances suck. Here’s hoping this cleanse works! I hope to eventually get off of my antacids, and eat some of my homegrown tomatoes.

Homestead InstructorHealing up your innards with a Leaky gut protocol is a great idea.
That said, I can’t tell you how many reflux cases I’ve addressed with the Digestive Support formula. It works really well for that. Just taken twice a day and as needed in between. The powder works best.
Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

StudentTopic AuthorThanks, Doc! I’ll put it on my list.
One of the unexpected side effects I’ve found from the Leaky Gut protocol is 1) my pre-menopausal hot flash went away completely–thanks! Probably due to the licorice? and 2) many of my sinus issues have abated considerably. For decades I’ve had what I called “snot plugs” in the back of my sinuses that I could never get out without a lot of hacking and pain. Now I don’t seem to get them as much, and when I do I just take some of the marshmallow powder as a tea and they come out pretty quickly. Oh, and so far I seem to have been able to get off my daily prescription Pepcid–though I think that, ongoing, that the digestive powder would help that a bunch as well.

Homestead InstructorYup. Marshmallow should be part of everybody’s daily fare. The body can find all kinds of great uses for it.
Licorice is a great endocrine modulator. The Chinese put it in about everything. They call it The Great Harmonizer.

StudentTopic AuthorThat brings up one question I’ve been having about herbal medicine in general–is it ever bad that herbals have many different uses? I’m mean, it’s really awesome that herbs do so much more than prescriptions do, but it kind of seems like it’s too good to be true. For example, if I didn’t have sinus issues, would taking marshmallow make my sinuses have issues with too much mucus (or whatever)? Or if I wasn’t having hot flashes, would licorice mess up my hormonal balance?

StudentThat’s a question I’ve had for a while now – different herbs, different conditions – but the thought that maybe you didn’t need something for your hormones, but it was in something you took for something else. Cara, you and I seem to be on the same page often!
Doc – are there some herbs that “should” be taken daily as we age? Kind of a tonic type thing, or should we instead just “treat” individual things (as referenced in the questions above) and see where things go? Part of why I ask is the size of the packages of some of your powders – there would be a LOT of tinctures from those 1 lb bags! Thanks.

Homestead InstructorThat’s a complicated question but for the most part, herbs have wide safety margins and rarely cause negative issues. Look at it like a buffet. Your body knows what it needs and the herbs have things to offer. In many cases, things that aren’t needed or used by the body are simply eliminated. That said, if you take high doses of something long term, it’s going to have an impact. The ones that have strong effects that might disrupt normal systems aren’t usually herbs one would take long term anyway. Most herbs are used on an as needed basis. Some can also be wonderfully nutritive daily tonics. You can take all the marshmallow you want and it will only do you good. :0)

StudentOh, I forgot to ask you Doc – you mentioned the great uses of licorice, but hubby takes those corticosteroids in his twice daily inhaler (which I would LOVE to see him come off of). I read that the steroids are a contraindication for licorice – true or false? BTW, he has hardening of the plural plaque – and if you know of something that would either help or eliminate the need for the inhalers, oh my goodness would that be fantastic!

Homestead InstructorYup. Licorice and steroids are a bad combination.
Did he have asbestos exposure?

StudentSadly yes to the asbestos exposure. I keep hoping we can get him “close” to normal lung function with herbs though.
