Doc, I’m sorry if I asked this before. I cannot find the thread. Sorry.

What is the action that lemon balm has on the thyroid that may be of concern? Please explain it. Thanks a ton.

I think it suppresses the thyroid.

I’m so glad you brought this up!  I didn’t know lemon balm did that!

I was interested in this reply as well. I will make a note of this and not give it to my husband. He had radiation on his neck and blood tests showed issues with his thyroid. He has just started taking the “thyroid stim powder” and has felt more energy than he has for quite a while!

Interesting about the radiation.  Dr. Jones has talked about radiation in one of his lectures.   Ask Doc. about that.

When I was diagnosed with Graves Disease, I was directed by my Integrated MD to take Lemon Balm, which is also named ‘Melissa”.
It had a calming effect and was helpful in treating the Graves. In 3 months, I went into remission and never went active again. There were other things I did, but lemon balm helped. I grow it now and enjoy it as a tea today, 12 years later.

Lemon balm, motherwort and bugleweed are all cousins and can all suppress thyroid hormone production and release if used long term or in high doses.

Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

Will those herbs react the same way on someone without a thyroid but on thyroid hormone replacement medication?

The research isn’t super conclusive. It may have some effect on thyroid hormone binding to receptors but we aren’t sure.

I think if someone is on replacement, they might think about not using high doses of lemon balm long term. But for occasional use for insomnia or a herpes outbreak, I wouldn’t worry about it at all.
