My daughter was diagnosed with a lower bulging disc. The herbs I had on hand to use for this were: Burdock, Chamomile and Lobelia. (I wish I had some teasel because the bulging disc is pushing on a nerve and affecting her walking and teasel came to my mind as I pondered what to do for her but alas…..). My question is: How much Lobelia do you usually start with? I don’t want to induce puking in anyone so I started with about 3/4 tsp to a mix of 2 tsp of the other ingredients? What do you usually use when your backs are acting up? And how much?

It sounds like you are really in need of some anti inflammatory herbs for this. Just got home from work and my mind is blank on that right now. Will get back if I think of anything.

Dosing lobelia is different for everyone. My dose usually comes to 20 to 30 mL (2-3 cc’s). I just pull on the syringe until my body tells me to stop. The strength of the tincture used or the dry herb can affect the dosing as well.

For me, much more than a teaspoon of the dry powder will cause some exciting nausea. :barf:

But, as Steven said, everyone is different. Cramp bark can also be used in the same way without the puking. 🙂

Review the Pain Management with Herbs module. There are some good ideas there. Antispasmodics (like crampbark or Lobelia) and nervines will likely be your best bet on a disk issue.

Acupuncture can also be really effective for disc cases. I’ve recently been adding acupuncture to my management of dachshunds that blow disks in their back and have been impressed with the difference.

Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.
