Need some troubleshooting help here, if anyone pleases!  I made Doc’s Save Yer Skin lotion, and while I know I made a couple mistakes (despite stellar teaching), I think I’m close!

I made an infused oil with comfrey, calendula, and chamomile in olive oil.  I added beeswax in the 1oz:1cup ratio (no issues there…great ratio!).  At the end, I added marshmallow tea and beat the berjeebers out of it.  It came up nicely, but…

        Three questions:

1  When I made my marshmallow tea, I remembered to do cold, but it basically turned into porridge when I shook it up.  I mean look out Elmer, there’s a new glue in town!  I kind of glopped it into my salve to make the lotion, and it worked, but I was unable to stran it, it was so thick!  So…What should be the ration of parts of marshmallow to water?  I feel like an outstanding idiot!

        2.  How do you correct an oily lotion?  More beeswax, or more tea/water at the end during emulsification?  My noggin says beeswax, because of the whole oil & water thing, but the lady who files in my head seems to be having issues lately lol.

        3.  I know we used the folk method for the oil, but if we were doing ratios of parts, what’s a place to start?  I was using a pint jar to infuse my oil (I used the double boiler method), so I put a cup of oil in first, then added my oil, so obv I couldn’t know when I had 1/2″ over the top until I let it sit for a while, and even then, it was a guess.  I’m not so good with estimates when I’m learning…later I can guess when I know a little more!

Thanks for any help to the above!

I think I may have solved one of my issues…when I made my marshmallow tea, I did like I usually do, and just threw the herb in the water, intending to strain later (seems to extract more when all the bits are floating).  I’m going to try putting it in a sachet and see if that still gives me a good enough tea.  But all the rest of the questions remain for troubleshooting lotions!

Thanks Jodie..I intend to make that formula as well. So I really appreciate you asking a question that I need to know about for when i do.

I ground my marshmallow in a coffee grinder which makes for a lot less floaty bits. I actually ground some up this morning because I have gut issues and have realised (thanks to your question and docs answers )that Marshmallow is a really good replacement for slippery elm. So thank you and happy remedy making!

              Hi Jodie,

              Mine in Bold

1  When I made my marshmallow tea, I remembered to do cold, but it basically turned into porridge when I shook it up.  I mean look out Elmer, there’s a new glue in town!  I kind of glopped it into my salve to make the lotion, and it worked, but I was unable to stran it, it was so thick!  So…What should be the ratio of parts of marshmallow to water?  I feel like an outstanding idiot!

Well…too much can be too much with mucilaginous herbs. I’d say a couple of teaspoons per cup of water if it’s pure marshmallow.

              2.  How do you correct an oily lotion?  More beeswax, or more tea/water at the end during emulsification?  My noggin says beeswax, because of the whole oil & water thing, but the lady who files in my head seems to be having issues lately lol.

Could also be the excess of marshmallow. It’s quite slippery. If it actually is oil, a bit more wax.

I always just eyeball it. I’d guess I’m putting a tablespoon or so of herb per cup of oil.

Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

Thanks Doc!  Didn’t consider that rhe excess mucillage would make it seem oily.  I used q heaping tsp of marshmallow powder to 1 cup water.  Glue!  I will do the sachet next time for sure.  I think for the oil i used too much herb, as i did 3 oz herb (1 oz ea) to 1 cup olive oil.  All in all, it’s great first lotion!

My first granddaughter from my only child is being born today!  Thanks for the reply…now i can make a gooder (lol) batch for her baby bum!

Brand new student and also an old fart! I miss books, study guides and note taking days. This post is to complete a quiz requirement. I also planted a marshmallow plant and have never harvested it for use. Thank you for your patience with me.
