Hi! I am trying to develop a sleep tincture and would like to add magnesium citrate to it but I’m unsure whether or not it is safe to mix the magnesium with the vodka. Maybe there is a better way to combine the herbs and magnesium than a tincture. Any ideas would be appreciated!

I didn’t know magnesium citrate can help promote sleep, but it’s a very effective laxative.

Magnesium can be very helpful in some insomnia cases. I wouldn’t bother adding it to the tincture. Just take it separately.

Magnesium isn’t particularly soluble in ethanol and will just sink to the bottom. Also, there isn’t enough data to know what phytochemicals may bind with minerals like that and how it may change their efficacy. There are too many plants and too many constituents to predict with any certainty whether adding minerals and such to tinctures will change anything chemically. I don’t think there’s any reason to think it’d be dangerous but it may decrease benefits by binding with something and thus affecting its bioavailability to the body or its chemical activity.

Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

Thank you for your response, the things you covered were exactly my concerns. I guess I was trying to make an “all in one” tincture but it would be wise to take the herbs & magnesium separately. I truly appreciate the school, your teaching and your interaction with the students. A rarity now a days.
