StudentI may be making this harder than it needs to be, but it seems like the three herbs in the AZMA formula need to be extracted with three different menstruums. The Brigham Tea should be fine to extract with vodka. The Gumweed would need Everclear because of the sticky gums. Lobelia leaf needs a little AC vinegar along with the vodka to extract all the medicine. So, do I extract all of the herbs separately, and then mix the tinctures together in equal parts? I’m using a pound of each of the herbs and hoping to get a lot of tincture, so I can’t afford to make an error that will ruin the batch. Help, please!

StudentYes, I would tincture them all separately. This gives you the greatest chance to extract the most benefits of the herb individually and it gives you flexibility in creating your finished product. Basically, by having them done individually, you can decide how large of a bottle of finished product you want (ie start with a 30 ml bottle…10 ml of each herb/1 part of each herb) and when you want more you have the three available to do it again or to add to a different formula since you tinctured them all individually from the beginning. Hope that makes sense!!

Homestead InstructorHi Laura,
Sorry I missed this one somehow. When I make AZMA tincture I just use vodka and mix all the herbs together. Works great.
It’s true that you could get slightly better extractions of Lobelia and gumweed by babying them with some special processes as mentioned, but the vodka tincture of that formula works great so it really isn’t worth the bother to do the other stuff for formula tinctures with those two plants.
Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.
