I am grinding up some of the mallow that I harvested this year.

Is there any advantage, medicinally or otherwise, for separating the root from the above ground portion?

The entire plant is both edible and medicinal. The root will have more mucilage than the tops. The tops will have more vitamins. I usually just use the entire plant when making medicine.

If you wanted, you could dry and grind the roots for medicine and the tops to add to soups this winter. 🙂

I ground up some root this afternoon. Some of it was small, whole root, some was large root chopped up in chunks and some was root that I had processed through my electric food grinder.

Wow, what a difference the food grinder made. The result was MUCH finer and consistent. The chunks result has a LOT of longer fibers that will be VERY difficult to work with. There was quite a bit of residual moisture in them as well. I am letting both batches sit and dry some more before I try to grind it for a finer texture.

I will have to bring the root grindings and the tops that I sieved on our electric sieve machine at work by to show you Saturday.
