StudentHey Doc,
My marshmallow is growing like a weed:)
1. How medicinal are the aerial parts compared to the root?
2. Would I get the same benefits with the aerial parts as with the root if I simply doubled the amount of aerial parts?

Dr. Patrick Jones
Homestead InstructorThe leaf and root are both medicinal. The root is stronger. That said, unless I was treating a case where I was trying to talk threatened tissue out of dying (ie…rattlesnake bite or pre-gangrene case), Id be happy with the leaf.

StudentTopic AuthorThank you Doc. Are the stems and flowers as medicinally potent as the leaves or less so?

Homestead InstructorYup. Marshmallow, mallow and hollyhock are all very similar. The leaves work but the root is better.

StudentTopic AuthorThanks again Doc!
So to be clear about these three plants:
Marshmallow; leaves and roots are medicine
Mallow: aerial parts are medicine
Hollyhock: leaves and roots are medicine
Is this correct?
Secondly, do you know how much less medicine is in leaves as opposed to roots?

Dr. Patrick Jones
Homestead InstructorAll three species have the same medicinal parts, leaf (aerial parts) and root.
The root is always stronger and has much more mucilage. I don’t have a number for that difference.

StudentDr. Jones, Okra is in the Mallow family and mucilaginous, could it work similarly in its’ soothing function to Marshmallow? I know the leaves are an edible green as well as the pods.
Thanks

Homestead InstructorOkra’s sliminess ,makes all other mucilaginous herbs seem like sandpaper. It has some other nice medicinal properties as well.
The only difficulty with okra is getting who’ve eaten it before to be willing to poke it into their mouth. LOL

Dr. Patrick Jones
Homestead InstructorI’ve used it on a number of mammals including humans.
I do it internally and topically every 2-4 hours on cases where tissues is struggling.

StudentI harvested and dried a lot of hollyhock flower petals – what are they good for? I know the leaves, and did a fair number of them as well, but the plants developed “rust” on the leaves after a bit, so I didn’t use those leaves, and there weren’t that many leaves by that time that were good. The flowers were fine all season, so I harvested them instead. Good uses of the flower petals?

Homestead InstructorYup. You can use the flowers too. Again…not as strong as the root. They also have some useful diuretic properties. They make infected bladders happy (as do the rest of the clan).

StudentTopic AuthorSpeaking of the “clan,” I was in southern Utah over the summer and saw a bunch of plants that must have been in the mallow family. It looked like desert mallow. Does it (and other mallows) have all the same qualities as hollyhock, marshmallow, and mallow?

Dr. Patrick Jones
Homestead InstructorYes, globemallow or desert mallow is a similar cousin. The genus is Sphaeralcea. There are a number of species.

StudentTopic AuthorDoc, to clarify, are you saying only the flowers have mild diuretic properties or the whole marshmallow plant?
-
April 6, 2024 at 9:55 AM #52102
Dr. Patrick Jones
Homestead InstructorThe flower has more diuretic properties than the root but is still very mild. Neither would be my first choice if I was looking for a diuretic specifically.

StudentI just did some further reading on
“Plants for a Future”website on Okra. It said the roots are also edible, very fibrous, mucilaginous and claimed by some, to be better than Marshmallow. Any thoughts? The stem can also be processed, spun or made into paper, for all you fiberistas out there(I’m one.)

Dr. Patrick Jones
Homestead InstructorOne of the things I like best about marshmallow root over all of the other cousins is the larger size and the fact that it’s less fibrous. Makes for nicer processing.
