Doc, I have in my notes that marshmallow is an expectorant. What is the action that marshmallow has as an expectorant? Does it move cilia?

Marshmallow stimulates mucus production in the respiratory tract which thins the mucus and makes it easier to move out. It also soothes the airways and decreases inflammation so mucus can move better.

Thanks Doc. It’s been interesting. I’ve tried taking 1 tsp of marshmallow root in 4 oz of water, followed by another 4 or more ounces of water in the mornings because I was hoping for increased hydration of the body in general and less inflammation. Anyway, several times, after drinking it, I get a cough. (Not always.) It’s sort of like it’s stimulating expectoration. Is this a normal reaction after taking the dried herb in water? (I don’t let it sit and get super mucilaginous either. I just stir it in and drink it right away.)

I don’t usually cough from drinking an infusion.
