I recently had a ewe who developed mastitis in her right udder. She has had a history of mastitis, starting with last year. She is currently pregnant (3 months) and dried off, so it was easy to notice one bulging, along with her visible distress and disinterest in grain or hay. I milked out the udder and injected a mixture up her teat that consisted of 1 tbsp castor oil, 12 drops peppermint oil, and 16 drops tea tree oil. Left it in overnight and milked it out of her udder the next morning. The ewe was in considerably better spirits, more responsive, no longer grinding her teeth or moaning, and was happily eating both grain and hay. The udder had not refilled with infected fluid, but had a bit of a mass. re-injected the same mixture up her teat again, then left it for 24 hours. Milked it out, and there is no evidence of mastitis. Several days later, the mastitis has not returned and the ewe has resumed normal behavior.

I had to create a topic for my orientation class, and I figured this may help another person with dairy sheep or goats. The solution as a flush (stronger at 1tbsp castor oil with 20 drops peppermint and 25 drops tea tree) and used in combination with colloidal silver also seems effective for staph infections on the udders. This is just my experience, and I figure if you’re having the same issue, there’s no harm in trying.
