StudentIn digging deeper into the extraction issue (because I’ve always heard that different menstruums extract different properties) – I found this on Meridians of Health .com (and finding out if this is totally true or not is my goal)…
“Alcohol can extract alkaloids, glycosides, resins, oils, hormones, tannins, acids, sugars, and starches. Vinegar can extract minerals, trace elements, vitamins, and alkaloids. Glycerin can extract tannins, minerals, vitamins, and mucilage. Water can extract most compounds, although it sometimes needs the help of heat, and water without alcohol does not prevent spoilage. Sometimes one combines vinegar with alcohol so as to extract the nutritional and medicinal properties together; this combination is useful for burdock tinctures, for example.”
My thinking is that if one is making a “nutritional tonic” full of vitamins and minerals, it would appear that alcohol alone will not do that job. Please show me proof either way since the internet is totally full of conflicting information and it just leaves me scratching my head!

StudentTopic AuthorI’ve taken a bit of a spin with google scholar, but a lot of that is too deep for my old brain. Anyone that is interested in this topic and can “speak google scholar” and wants to share the results – I’d be most appreciative!

StudentYou are correct, alcohol will not extract things like soluble fibers from the herbs, that’s why Doc only sells the prebiotic formula as a powder and capsules and not as a tincture

StudentTopic AuthorI would like to see a scientific paper on the menstruum issue though (one actually written in layman’s language) – just to put it to bed in my mind once and for all since there are MANY on the web that state that alcohol will extract vitamins and minerals. I totally understand that the fiber cannot be extracted in a tincture though. Thanks 🙂
