        Hello, everyone!

I’m looking for some advice on treating mastitis in my milk cow, Lissy. She is a sweet, productive cow and much loved by us all! She had no symptoms of mastitis yesterday (I always milk out fully, clean udder, clean pen, Teat Koat dip after milking). This morning she was lethargic and walking very slowly as if she was weak or unsteady. We gave her some magnesium and B vitamins right away just in case (she had magnesium tetany 2 weeks ago), but once I got her into the stanchion, I could feel that one of her quarters was very full and firm. I milked out as much as I was able to get from it. She was flinching when I applied pressure, but otherwise the quarter didn’t feel hot or look inflamed. Her temp was 100.5, which is in the normal range for a cow. I’m hoping to nip this in the bud before it gets any worse. Any advice on herbs to give her orally, topically, or in an enema would be very welcome! Thanks.

Hello, if you still have a calf nursing on this cow, that is great as the calf will help to draw out the milk plug. Keep milking the affected teat as often as possible 3-4 times a day is great. Some peppermint oil in a carrier oil rubbed onto the udder  will help to stimulate circulation and the heat is soothing. Keep the cow drinking lots of water. If she is eating ,eliminating and acting otherwise normal, then it is just a waiting game. You will know when she has healed when the milk no longer takes a long time to drain and is no longer stringy and separated. In future you can inject a herbal remedy up into the teat when you are drying her off to prevent mastitis next season. I can send you that product if interested.
