        1. I am on a trip to pick up a new eight week old Australian shepherd puppy and need to fly home in a couple of days. I didn’t plan ahead thinking about motion sickness but I have been warned that could be a problem. Is there anything you all would recommend to prevent that? I am limited with time and resources at this point. Just wondering if you guys have any advice?

First off, congrats on the new puppy, Leah! I had my first Aussie when I was 2 years old! And have had one most of the time since. 🙂 They are great dogs! I’m sure you know, but they can be very high energy and love to have interaction and direction in their lives. Keep plenty of good-quality chew toys around!

So when I bred my Aussie, one pup from the litter had issues with car sickness. The others didn’t. So hopefully yours won’t at all. But I hear that opening a bottle of peppermint essential oil in the car helps. Haven’t tried it and that would be harder to do in an airplane. Holding our pup helped the most. It seems that she did better when we were cushioning the ride for her.

When my dog was a puppy he had terrible motion sickness! I gave him some ginger in a pill form with very little food. It knocked it out! No more motion sickness. So I let my breeder know and she said that every pup she sold had motion sickness except the one they gave the ginger to. Every time I took the dog out in the car I would give ginger about 15 min. before the trip.
