I live in central Utah and within the next few weeks I will be heading up the mountain to go wood cutting. I was thinking it would be a good time to collect some herbs while I am up there. I am new at this though, so I was wondering what suggestions you have as to what to look for, ect. Thanks!

I was up in the canyons above Salt Lake about a month a go. Just on my limited stroll near the road I saw a ton of herbs. Off the top of my head I remember…

          Oregon Grape

          Cleavers

          Balsalm root

          Hound’s tongue

          Burdock

          Mullein

          Yellowdock

          Sweet clover

          cinquefoil

          Mallow

          dandelion

          plantain

There is certainly lots of other stuff to be had as well. Get a copy of Michael Moore’s Medicinal Plants of the Mountain West and go get some stuff. Use good/ethical harvesting techniques so you can go to the same places and collect next year. 🙂

You bet. Have a good time. 🙂

The gumweed (Grindelia) is blooming this time of year too. That’s a good one to have.

Because of your video I notices that I have it all over the outskirts of my yard! I will definitely be harvesting.

Yeah, you problably don’t need to go to the mountains to find the dandelions, mallow or plantain either. 😉

So I have been wondering if you are like in the canyons is it ok to just take herbs growing wild. I don’t know why but I always feel like I shouldn’t but I am guessing its probably fine.

You’ll have to check your local laws. As I recall the state parks and national parks have different rules. On private lands, one should always ask of course. Public lands are fair game. Harvest carefully with respect for the plants and you’ll be able to use the same spots year after year.

State and National parks usually take offense to someone “stealing” the states plants.

National Forests are a different story though. You can collect from there unless specifically prevented from doing so.

Moore’s book is pretty good about mentioning plants that are at risk as well.

It’s a bit comical. The state parks won’t let you pick weeds that are on the state’s invasive/pernicious weeds lists. Apparently the state parks have become “sanctuary cities” for introduced pest plants. 🙄
