Hi! I recently found a beautiful, giant plant in my yard that I believe is mullein. It has the big, very fuzzy leaves and is not in a big cluster as I’ve heard lambs ear would be.. should I wait and see if it grows a big stalk with yellow flowers in the middle before foraging?

Get PictureThis on your phone. It’s quite good for ID.

Or do an image search on Google using Verbascum thapsus as the search term.

Wondering if it grew the stalk? Mulleins are bi-annual so if it had a lot of big leaves it may not have flowered this year.

I was wondering the same thing but did not know it was a bi-annual. Thank you for that information.

Hello! I planted Mullein this past year and very little came up in that row. (Small seeds like pepper.) However, with the help of insects or birds(?) it was flourishing in the chamomile, nettles, and artemisia. 🙂  The Picture This app saved alot of plants from being pulled as invasive! Mullein syrup worked great on a cough, too, glad to have it!

I transplanted a first year plant into my back yard last year.  I’m hoping to get seeds for more.  Crossing my fingers.

I have it growing in several places in my garden one right our the back door so it was real easy to harvest the flowers on the stalk.

Mullein has really thick leaves.  Not uncommon for them to be 1/8” thick and covered in thick but soft hairs.  It totally reminds me of exactly how my dogs ears feel when I give them a massage.
