StudentI’m about to harvest some mullein. Is there a difference in potency if done with fresh leaves over dried? Would fresh need a higher proof alcohol?

StudentI have dried all of mine and they work pretty well. When I tinctured mine though, it was so light that it basically floated on top of the vodka and it also didn’t weigh hardly anything, so the folk method was the only way I could figure out how to get it tinctured

StudentTopic AuthorDo you wash yours first before drying? Then after drying do you just chop it or grind it? Doubt it matters either way.

StudentIt depends on where I’m at when I harvest it, and if I flung dirt all over it when I was trying to dig it out haha. I always use my vitamix to grind all my herbs. The mullein though is so light and airy that yeah I don’t think it matters

StudentUsing a glass fermentation weight might be helpful to weigh the mullein down.

StudentI am harvesting mullein root. I am not able to grind it but did manage to cut some of it in small chunks. I have a couple pieces that are too large for me to cut. How long would I need to dry them? One piece is about 1/2 an inch thick and a couple inches long. The other one is about an inch wide and 5 or 6 inches. I would like to make it into a tincture.

StudentMaybe use a small pair of pruners. If all else fails I would put in an old pillowcase and hit it with a hammer to see if you can then cut it. In my experience you need to get roots cut up as soon as possible because they become very hard like wood.

StudentDoes it matter what species of mullien? I don’t know if mine is verbascum thapsus or verbascum phlomoides…
