Hello I have a smaller mutt dog and she has chronic skin issues and hair loss so the vet keeps putting her on long term prednisone for this and she has gained a lot of weight and here recently her muscle are like Charley horsed they are sooo tight and she is having a hard time getting around. I look up the side effects of long term use of prednisone and yes one of the side effects is muscle cramping…She is also on Rymadl for her joint pain. I am wanting her off the prednisone and have started the tapering dose however I want to start her on herbs in place of the steroids and rymadl (sp?) please I need help she is really suffering.

Hi there – have a look at Doc Jones’s K9 formulas.  There’s a formula for joint pain.  Also look at the plant information on cramp bark for muscle tension and yucca root as a prednisone alternative.  I hope it helps your pup!

I Would look into food allergies I have had  cocker spaniels for over 40 years they have skin problems ear problems. The first 20 years I worked with vets and tried everything to help my dogs then I read that cockers have problems with food allergies. I thought it cant heart to try and change foods until I find what works. so I set to slowly change foods until I  either find the food allergy or I would have peace of mind that I tried everything. So far I have found the food allergies and have not had trouble with my pups Ears or skin since. Just an idea. If you can fix the problem you wont need the meds that are so very hard on them.
