One important aspect of foraging, besides knowing WHAT is edible is knowing WHAT IS NOT edible. Her is a page from a site that Patrick and I subscribe to.

Notice how many of the deadliest plants have white flowers in an umbrella arrangement. This is the family umbeliferiae. Lots of our favorite herbs and edibles are in this group as well.

Every year a few competent herbalists and edible plant guys fall over dead from mis-identifying these.

As they say, “Be humble with the Umbels!”

I purchase seed and grow my own plants on my own property from this group. That way I know what I have. I see them in the wild all the time. I just say hello and keep walking…especially if I’m sure of what it is because that’s when you get dead.

Steven and I ran into some lovely Angelica up in the hills last year. It’s still there.

Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.
