The best idea I have for note taking is to use index cards . . .

The problem is . . . mine are all over the place and I need to distinguish them from one another better.

Hi Jean,  Taking notes on index cards is a great idea.  I have followed Ryan Holiday who has a great system for his note-taking on index cards.  He’s an author who researches and writes books based on historical people, so he needs to access his cards easily.  You can find videos he’s made about this on YouTube and I think his channel name is “Daily Stoic” for his directions.  I’ve just started the course and I will be looking back to his note-taking videos for help.

That’s a great idea, Jean.  Thanks for sharing.  I’ve seen colored index cards, and maybe they would be ideal.  I am just starting so I’m not sure what categories it will be best to divide the information into, but it would be a start!

Hope your journey and learning never end.

Hi Alice,  I am trying to keep my index cards straight by putting a selected word for a title and then putting the date and time stamp on it.  That way I hope that I will be able to follow one index card to the next. I just started trying this out.

As for color coded index cards, they would work great, but I would have to have major categories listed or I would run out of colors. IE: green for this course, pink for the critters, blue for whatever, yellow for something else.  The blue color is kind of too dark? unless you get a pastel blue. I love the yellow.

I have actually seen the 3×5 note cards with spiral bindings.

Yes, the spiral ones are very nice.  I have 16 of them for different purposes.  They are very nice if you can stay disciplined to write in the one that is titled HERBS. I find myself grabbing bits of paper here and there, whatever is close by to write notes on. Sometimes the info does not make it to the right spiral (meaning the HERBS spiral may have a recipe or two as well.) I am finding they work well for recipes that I am using quarterly. IE Spring recipes vs Summer recipes vs Fall recipes vs Winter recipes.

So, yeah, the white loose index cards work out well because they dont belong in any catagory.  They can be picked up from various places in the house.

What would be PERFECT is the card catalog my daughter bought a few years back!  HUGE!  But, she was in the midwest back then and moved and probably left it with the house.

                      Sorry to ramble . . .

But, I think a card catalog will work for me wonderfully.

My problem is also writing notes on little slips of paper and then losing those.  The more times I write something down, the better I can remember it. So, my approach will probably be jotting down that note, then typing it into a computer made document.  I have a spiral binding machine so I can put together a bound booklet of different categories of notes.

                              Hi Helen,

Find a pretty basket to slip those little note papers in.  I started doing this about a month ago and it is working fabulous. Now all I have to do is categorize them and put them into a plastic box like the one they showed in the video.

One thing about the spirals, you can tear individual pages out on the perforations and put them in your files elsewhere if need be.

There are also index cards with holes in them to make your own grouped together cards. Using a metal ring to hold them together via the holes in the cards.

Thank you Linda, here is the youtube video of Ryan Holiday’s notecards and how he does his research.  I love this method – thanks for the tip.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gT1EExZkzMM

I can see that I am going to have to start all over again reorganizing my notes better so that I can find them again.  That box idea would help.  Not a card catalog like the old ones . . . but light and portable. Nice!

One thing I fail to do is, have index cards easily accessible.   I tend to grab whatever is near by IE: backs of envelops, to take notes on.

That is my preferred method of note taking too! lol. I start with notebooks and mark them for specific things; journaling, household lists, note taking…then I end up picking up which ever one is closest and use it. So in the end, all my notebooks have a variety of things written in them. Then I have to look through them all to find my notes, measurements I took for the living room, etc…

Maybe using old school recipe boxes and the ABC mini index organizers would help!?

It does Angela, I have several.  But, I tend to never look into them again for some reason?  Maybe because they hold one kind of theme because they are small.  I also have larger boxes with index cards in them. But, none of these are in one place in the house. Like for instance, I would not know where to put 6 small boxes so that they would be accessible all of the time and still look nice. (I have a mix-mash of containers, not all the same type) Some medium size index type boxes have sliders in them and I find that the sliders just take up too much extra room and get in the way.  Of course, the other drawback is that if you get a box too big . . . one could drop it and it would land on the floor in a million pieces.  So, I am not sure what the perfect answer is.  I guess it depends on how many index cards one has (and how many themes have to be dealt with.  Now I am making it sound impossible!  I guess that is how I feel.  A little over whelmed.  Certainly if just starting out the small boxes work fine.  Maybe I should think about downsizing my stash!  I think I take too many notes!

Gosh! I thought I was the only one that wrote notes on the back of envelopes.  I think it’s a great idea to learn more ways to take notes that you can refer back to.

                                                Kelly,

Exactly!  So, one respect, we defeat our purpose.  However, there is one way to deal with that, sort of.  Not sure who’s video cover’s it and I cant think of what it is called.  You number each page in the notebook.  You make an index in the front of the notebook. You label your different categories in the index by page.  So, you could actually do that to any notebook that ends up having more then one theme in it.

Then you can scroll down the index page and look for the particular theme your needing.

You know, the card catalog idea is coming back as the perfect solution again.  No dropping boxes with index cards all over the floor. And of course, along with the card catalog would be a nice wall size old fashioned chalk board.  We’d all save a ton a paper that way, or, at least I would.  That hard part is getting a spouse on board. 🙁
