I am a little confused about the parts of the plant used in making oatstraw medicine. Is it the milky oat tops or the actual straw or both? I watched a couple videos that mentioned oatstraw, and it seemed a little unclear.

That’s a good question. I always thought it was the top 1/4 of the plant when the oats where in the milky stage. But come to think of it, the oat straw I have doesn’t have any dried oat pieces in it. And it would seem the milky oats would be hard to dry. So now I’m just as confused as you. 🙂

Hi Y’all, The milky oats are the tops when harvested during the “milky stage” and they can also be called “Milky Tops”. The Oat Straw is the rest of the harvested material as it still contains minerals and such just not as full of goodness as the Milky Tops.

I just put up a quickview.

Oat Straw (Avena sativa) a.k.a. Milky Oats
