StudentThis morning I did my first oil pulling episode with coconut oil. At first I wanted to gag, but I persisted. It wasn’t bad at all. The amazing thing was it was yellow when I spit it out. Crazy.

StudentYeah, we used to do it long ago, and for some reason got out of the habit. We had a tin can from veggies or something that we kept in the bathroom to spit in so we didn’t have to waste paper towels. Once full, we froze it and put it in the trash on trash day. We used to put a drop of clove essential oil in with the coconut oil, but now as we are starting again, we’ll probably put several drops of one of the tinctures! Happy swishing!

StudentI’ve done oil pulling with olive oil but have never added anything to it. Is there a list of things that would be good to add for specific concerns? I’m still learning to maneuver around the new site.

Homestead InstructorI just do it with the oil. For me addressing health issues is a separate project. I want the oil to pull stuff out not put stuff in. I’d wonder if adding stuff to the oil might interfere with its drawing capacity.

StudentJoelle, I am sure others can answer this better then I can. It has been my experience that the oil breaks down things. There is an interesting verse (in the bible) that says the tongue is full of poison (or something like that) I tend to take that figuratively as well as physiologically. It just might be that the oil pulling is drawing poisons out of the system via the tongue and some how our fats stores in the body are being cleansed by this very act. That is just what goes around in my head when I try to figure oil pulling out.

StudentDoes oil pulling need to be done first thing in the morning to be beneficial? Can it be done after having breakfast?

StudentCrystal, Only if you want to get sick. You have to do it on an empty stomach. Even if you drink water before hand, it can make you sick. It might work if you wait an hour after eating or drinking. But, best done in the morning.

StudentI’ll have to set a reminder. I keep forgetting about it until I’m ready to brush my teeth.

StudentI used to do this many years using coconut oil and also got out of the habit. My daughter-in-law just told me today that my son used lard (sounds awful) but since then his teeth haven’t been sensitive. Does it matter what kind of “oil” you use?

Oops! There are verses that mention the tongue can be used for good and for evil, so, its just a “vessel” for good or evil. My bad!

StudentA few weeks ago I started oil pulling with organic castor oil. I had read that you didn’t have to swish it for as long a coconut oil-only about 4-6 minutes instead of the 20 minutes with coconut oil. So, I used the castor oil and there was no problem until about 4 days in. (I was doing it everyday.) After the morning of the 4th day, I started getting a horrible migraine 10/10 pain!!! It lasted 6 days and I thought I was going to literally die! I couldn’t understand what was wrong.
(Of course when I started getting that migraine I quit taking any supplements, eating or oil pulling. The oil pulling was the new thing I had added to my regimen.) I finally recovered from the ordeal and decided it was probably pulling out too many toxins at once and that is why I got so sick! I took a couple of weeks off and starting oil pulling again, but this time with organic coconut oil, without any problems.
I just wanted to relay my experience to others. Take it slow and easy…

StudentI’ve been oil pulling for about 3 months, every morning before brushing my teeth. Using organic coconut oil, will go 10-20 minutes but with organic castor oil, only 2 minutes.
Was told that initially you could experience headaches from the “pulling” of toxins. Guessing that castor oil is a much stronger “puller” than coconut oil, so I’m very careful using it.
So far, have noticed healing of gums from areas of inflammation and a slight whitening of teeth, as well as more moisture overall. Hope this info helps.

StudentCoconut oil does the also make me gag. I was told there was some other oil one could use. But I do not know what it is. Any one know any other oil you could use?

StudentValerie, Oil pulling is detoxing cleanse method. You swish oil around in your mouth for several minutes, then spit it out in the garbage can (because if you use coconut oil—it will turn solid in your pipes and clog them over time)

StudentI have found in my own experience, that oil pulling is also a great way to encourage your sinuses and ears to drain stubborn morning congestion. I have also found the cleansing effects help prevent and hasten the recovery from sinus infections. Hope this helps!

StudentIt does take some time to get use to. I add some spearmint essentional oil to the coconut oil, I also use a smaller amount of coconut oil, otherwise too gaggy for me, as well. I have yet to try castor oil. Ive read it is a must smaller amount and a shorter time period, like two minutes.

StudentIn the video, Doc said to do most cleanses 1-2x/year. Does this apply to Oil pulling? Or are you doing it 3-4x/week? Or month? Any thoughts?

StudentKatelynn, With one of the cleanse kits, the oil for oil pulling comes with the kit. That said . . . some people oil pull whenever they feel the need to do so and not while doing a cleanse. Hope this helps!

StudentListening to the section on Oil pulling in Herbal Cleanses and found this thread. I was wondering about castor oil as I’ve heard it it more beneficial and you need less oil and less time swishing. Does anyone happen to have a reputable source or study regarding that? I did read the other comments and noticed some people have mentioned castor oil pulling.
I can’t handle one tablespoon which is generally recommended – my mouth just fills up too fast! – so I just do a teaspoon. Is there a disadvantage to that?
Also, wanted to share that I had a bout of oral thrush (self-diagnosed) and pulling with coconut oil helped significantly. I also used homeopathic Borax, but the oil pulling made a noticeable difference.
