        Doc,

When a person cannot eat garlic due to an allergy, to get the equivalent medicinal dose of garlic, but using onion, could they just take double the onion or does it not work that way?   Please explain.

          Hi Annette,

Garlic and onion are in the same family, so they share some medicinal properties, but they’re not interchangeable. It depends on what you are doing with it. Garlic contains a higher concentration of a compound called allicin, which is responsible for most of its health benefits. Onion doesn’t contain as much allicin. What are you using it for?

If it’s high blood pressure and garlic can’t be in the mix, you might consider cayenne pepper, Hawthorne, or try the Homegrown Herbalist’s Circulatory Support. These work great for me.

                Doc,

What is the action of onion that helps hypertension?

And is a dose of fresh onion the same as any fresh plant, 1 Tablespoon?

Do you know how long the blood pressure lowering lasts after taking a dose of onion?

Onion and garlic are in the same genus. Allergies to one are likely to be similar for the other.

My wife and I have been doing a lot of research into high blood pressure. She’s doing a lesson on it as we speak.

In the meantime, read Fix Your High Blood Pressure in 90 Days or Less by Joseph Amagada, MD.  The book is a remarkable resource. I’ve seen astounding results in people from the application of its principles. Almost everything in the book relates to nutrition and dietary things and some simple exercises that can be done for remarkable results.

Yes, it’s very weird that I can have onion and not garlic.

I have read the book as you suggested. I have one more chapter to go.  I have some questions:

Salt is always talked about, as in the book, but they never talk about the different salts to choose from.  I don’t know if I am getting correct info on the internet either. A few places I’ve read say that Himalayan salt has less sodium and a better overall nutrient profile and therefore is less a problem than table salt. So, can you clarify this for me?

Is the usual 1 T of fresh onion a dose of medicine?

How long does a dose of blood pressure lowering herbs last at lowering blood pressure?

I look forward to the blood pressure module you’re working on.  Thank you so much!!  Any chance you will be including how other diseases, like autoimmune & diabetes, play a role (what the correlation is) in high blood pressure?

Thank you so much for all that you and your wife do.  I sure appreciate learning all this!!

Salt is sodium chloride (NaCl) and is identical in all types of salt. That said, Himalayan salt also contains other minerals like calcium, magnesium, potassium etc… Because of that small dilution of the NaCl, Himalayan “salt” will have less salt in it than pure salt and thus will have slightly less sodium per ounce.

Onions contain a lot of water I’d probably double that for fresh.

How long does a dose of blood pressure lowering herbs last at lowering blood pressure?

Most folks take it 2-3 times a day. For some it’s a complete game changer. For some it isn’t. Blood pressure depends on a lot of variables.
