        1) Do onions do the same things medicinally as garlic does?

The only reference I have ever heard where onion and garlic were interchangeable was in treating ear aches.

Same here. But something I read made me wonder further. Thank you.

Does anyone know the exact health benefits from onion?

Onions and garlic are in the same genus and have very similar properties. Both are antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, immune stimulating etc… Both help control blood sugar and help with atheroscerosis and a half dozen other things.

And, eaten in large quantities, both can be effective for birth control…unless you can get your partner to hold their nose. 😉

They must be used raw. Cooked onions and garlic have no medicinal benefits.

Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

Last month I got influenza B and I had gunk in my chest. I knew that putting some chest rub is helpful for colds so I ground up fresh garlic (that I grew in my garden) and added some oil to it and put it on my chest. This was a very bad thing to do because it burned bad. After 15 minutes it was still burning and I figured it must not be for me because it hurt too much. Sure enough, when I wiped off the garlic poultice I had raised red dots on my skin. It took well over a week for them to heal. I thought garlic was safe externally.

So, my question: What did I do wrong? Should I have used a different medium for applying it?

Raw, fresh garlic can be pretty strong on sensitive skin areas.

Also, does anyone know if garlic is medicinal aromatically–like if I crushed them up and breathed them in?
