StudentI have a friend who has a daughter-in-law and 4 grandchildren with Osteogenesis imperfecta. She inquired about anything that would be helpful in strengthening the bones / preventing fractures? Any thoughts would be very much appreciated!

Homestead InstructorOsteogenesis imperfecta is a genetic disease. Unfortunately, we don’t have any good herbs for re-writing DNA. All I can think of would be to make sure her diet is good so that what bone she does make is made with good resources. If she does get a fracture, comfrey tincture topically can help it to heal faster.
Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

StudentDoc, my little niece (she’ll be 2 in May) was also diagnosed in January with OI, she just broke both femurs. I thought of using comfrey topically but she is in a cast. Is there another way of helping to promote healing? And as far as good diet, do you recommend a certain focus? Would the “Strong Bones” or “Bones, Tissue and Cartilage” formulas available on the website be helpful? Or not appropriate for such a young child?

I wouldn’t use the internal formulas on a little one that small. But topical comfrey would help. It’ll soak in and get where it’s needed even if the fracture isn’t right below the application site.
