Although we are working towards a permaculture/medicinal food forest paradigm, we are not ready for peppermint to just go wandering everywhere it wants to. Besides, don’t you just LOVE the name Peppermint Pen? It also fits in an area that was otherwise not being used very effectively.

This is a plastic ring that is left over from cutting out the broken bottom of a water trough.

In the first picture you see about 9 inches about the inside ground level. There is about 6 more inches below that level.

The second picture shows it partially filled with recycled potting soil that we get from a local nursery. We have found that the gh soil does not retain moisture very well and is difficult to wet if it gets too dry. Because of this we will top that with some goat manure from a neighbor and some native soil to give it some body.

That ought to make the rascals behave…as long as you don’t let it flower and seed.

What a brilliant idea!! I’ve had the problem of peppermint and spearmint running rampant before too. I’ve been given a 5000 gallon poly tank that was split down one side. I could get about ten of these gardens going! Ale hoof contained…At long last! coltsfoot, citronella geranium, Umckaloabo, Goldenrod, mugwort, all contained. It might even work for suckering trees like sloe plum.

As long as you don’t have ANY seams for the roots to find and escape! They WILL find the seams, guaranteed., especially if there is any root contact with surrounding dirt. 12 inches above grade should be enough, I would hope. Based on your comment in my goldenseal thread you probably would only want to bury just enough to keep it in place and provide minimal Earth contact for temp stability.
