I just tried making the Periodontal Formula using 30 grams calendula, 30 grams comfrey, 30 grams devil’s claw and 30 grams echinacea and then added 150 grams of vodka to make it 1:5 ratio. The problem is that all of the vodka was sucked up by the herbs and not all the herbs got wet. So I started adding more vodka to cover the herbs so that  changes the ratio of the formula. After the extra vodka, the herbs continued to soak the vodka and now the herbs are again not in the vodka. I shook the jar over and over again, but they are not all covered. Is this good enough for the tincture to do what it needs to do? If not, how do I remedy this now??? I guess this is why I need to powder all my herbs. Thank you to any and all that will respond to this post.

Okay, everyone…I figured out what went wrong. I should have added the total weight of the herbs and then multiplied that weight by five to get the 1:5 ratio. So, I was able to correct my tincture and add the amount of vodka to bring it to 600 ml. You know, if we were in a physical classroom setting, I am sure I would keep you all in stitches with my mistakes. But that is how we learn isn’t it?

          Blessings to all of you!

Some herbs are extra thirsty, the 1:5 ratio is not a hard and fast rule, and if you do the folk method you don’t even care about ratios and just make sure everything stays covered. 1:5 is a good rule of thumb, but 1:6 is fine, 1:10 is fine, it all depends on the herb. At this point, I would still track how much you use for the ratio for your own records, but just make sure it stays covered for a couple weeks and you’ll be fine

This is like a 1:1.25 ratio

You should have 120 grams of herbs and 600 cc(grams) of vodka

EDIT: I see that you figured that out haha
