My mother in law was bitten by a spider and was treating it with topical triple antibiotic cream. After treating it in that way for a week ( with no improvement and the wound increasing in size ) She tells her daughter Vicky  ( my wife ) about it. i gave her some dried Plantain that had been sitting in a paper bag for almost 2 years . told her to crunch it up and mix it with a little olive oil and bandage it onto the bite. the bite showed drastic improvement by the next day and was completely healed in less than a week.  Thats a pretty awesome thing i think.

I too have tons of bug bites. I just finished drying a big batch of plantain and I am going to make a salve for the little stinkers.

Good work Harold. Plantain really is amazing for venomous bites.

I have heard so much good about plantain, but I haven’t had any luck finding any where I love (outdoors or in a nursery). I have been able to find wooly lambs ear and have read that it can be used in a similar way. Would either of those plants work for spider bites, or is plantain the best choice?

                    Hi Lindsey

I am not sure about wooly lambs’ ear, but I did order some Plantain from a herbal online store. I was unsure about what it looked like and wanted to make sure I was genuinely receiving the right herb. However, I do live in Australia so I am not sure if you have herb stores online that will supply live plants. I found this to be extremely helpful when starting out.

Plantain!  My new favorite herb!!  My husband developed an abscess on the top of his foot about 6 weeks ago.  At first he thought it was gout but in a just few days it became so painful he was in the ER.  They drained it and put him on mega anti-biotics for 10 days.  I tried to get him to put some plantain on it but he would have none of that.  LOL Now, about a month later, the abscess has returned suddenly and again it was very painful to walk.  Rather than another trip to the ER, he agreed to put a plantain spit poultice on it and cover it with a band-aid overnight.  The next morning the abscess was almost gone.  I think that finally convinced him that I’m not crazy and herbs really are miraculous!  I now keep some plantain in the freeze.  I find it so much easier than doing a spit poultice – which gags me for some reason.  The freezer breaks down the cell membranes so you just need to roll it in your fingers instead of chewing it.  I’ve got so many stinging nettle babies self-sowing throughout my gardens (sneaky rascals are always finding their way out of their bed!) so am frequently getting stung.  Love having the frozen plantain ready to go!

Great idea keeping some in the freezer to bypass the spit.  I’m the same way about it.  I was the little kid who asked my mom why she blew her germs all over my owies after putting devil’s spit (methiolade or mercurochrome) on it to kill germs.  She thought I was being a smart alek, but to me, if you’re going to make matters worse pain-wise, do you really need to double down on germs too?  lol.   Yeah, I’m a load of fun at parties. haha  Thanks for the idea!

Plantain… I bought seeds from the herbal store.  It is growing beautifully.  I winter sowed it this spring – put it in a rolling self watering pot.  It was so happy until the deer started eating it.   I am not sure why the deer walked past the plantain in my yard to eat the plantain in the pot.  But luckily I put up a fence last fall and I moved the rolling pot into the fenced area.  I am excited to use soon.

I have narrow plantain too but didn’t Doc Jones have a video on a very large leafed plantain variety? I can’t seem to find that in the online seed stores that I know of. Any ideas?

                            Thanks in advance.

He doesn’t seem to have any listed.  Maybe when they go to seed he will be able to offer them again.  You can get some here:
