Hello All, I want to harvest my Plantain seeds for medicinal use. Well, I beleive it is actually the husks that I want for fiber option (Psyllium Husk). I have some flowering seed heads that I’ve dried but I went outside and found seed heads that look spent and wondering if that is what I actually need to harvest for the “husks”. Can anyone help me figure this out?

Maybe Doc can help us out here. What is the best way to harvest the seed husk? On the monograph it does not specifically say the seeds are medicinal. Are they edible or good for anything other than reseeding.

Hey Doc, do plantain seeds (that are inside the husks) have any medicinal properties?

The husk of Plantago seeds is psyllium. Basically a bulking laxative. It’s the main ingredient in products like metamucil. Plantage ovata is the species folks usually grow to harvest seed husks as it has much more than the other Plantago species. IF I wanted psyllium, I’d just buy it. It’s got a shelf life of forever (it’s just fiber, not chemical medcine) and isn’t very easy to harvest in quantity.
By the way, I’m harvesting Giant Turkish plantain seed that i just harvested if anyone wants some. Should be on the website in a few days.

Does narrow leaf plantain have similar health qualities as the broad leaf?

Yes, the leaf is the main medicine, so broad leaf is more desirable because you get more medicine
