I live in SC and Pokeweed is abundant right now…, particularly the berries. I’ve heard they can be used medicinally but would love to know how to best prepare and use.

I’m a member of a foraging group for eastern region peeps, and I see a lot of posts about poke weed.  From what I understand, the leaves and stems are toxic, but the berries are safe to use in jams and jellies.  I am not familiar with their medicinal properties.  I don’t think they grow out west, where I’m originally from.  If you’re on Facebook, look up The Herbalist Community group, and also Foraging for Wild Plants & Mushrooms.  I’ve been learning a lot about plants unique to this side (east and southeast) of the country.

I myself just learned that the new stocks (new growth like when young) are great fried! I do mean tender stock!

I don’t recommend Pokeweed use. Its safety margins are much narrower than most herbs and it doesn’t do anything that other, safer plants don’t do as well or better.

Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.
