StudentWe have a 9 year old rough collie that started having a runny/a little bloody nose, congestion and a large sore on the side of his mouth. The vet thought it might be an upper respiratory infection and put him on antibiotics. After only one week he had developed a raw crusty sore around one eye, sores in his ears and bleeding sores around the edges of his paw pads. We took him back in to the vet and he suggested we try a course of prednisone thinking that it is possibly an autoimmune disease – discoid lupus, canine dermatomyositis or something like this. We have not seen any improvement yet with the steroid but he has only been taking it for a few days. No one that we have talked to has had anything very encouraging to offer us.
Does anyone here have any experience with treating an autoimmune issue with herbal remedies? I would appreciate any help so much! Thanks!

Homestead InstructorIf the prednisone doesn’t change anything, it’s probably not an autoimmune disease. Give it a week or so and see what happens.
Otherwise, for autoimmune disease, I do the same things I do with people. Have a look at the Immune System III lesson on allergies and autoimmune disease.

StudentTopic AuthorThank you for your input. I thought I would just finish the story in case anyone else might wonder about the outcome.
The prednisone did seem to help at first. After about a week on it the sores around his eyes and on his feet looked much better. He did quite well for about 6 weeks then his symptoms started to return. He nose started bleeding again and the sores on the pads of his feet opened back up. The vet thought it may have been some kind of cancer instead or in addition to an autoimmune condition. He passed away this past weekend.

Homestead InstructorSorry to hear about that. Poor guy.
It was almost certainly not just an autoimmune disease.
