I was making grape leaf tincture and decided to start this year off with 1:5 ratio. I have always just filled jar and added alcohol. I weighed the leaf and added the liquid but the liquid wasn’t enough to cover the leaf. Does anyone else run into this problem. Is it better to powder the leaf first?  It may give more weight per volume is my thought. Thanks

I always powder whatever I’m tincturing first, that way it covers more surface area and I think gets a better extract. As far as sticking to the 1:5 ratio, it just isn’t going to work with some herbs as they are just too thirsty (hops, mullein). The main thing is to make sure everything gets covered and you’ll do fine

Thank you Greg and yes I think I will powder them first when possible. I did however try to powder grape leaf last year and it turned into something that resembled stuffing in a chair. It became very dense and fluffed at the same time. I will however attempt blending leaves with alcohol and see how that works. Like I have the wild lettuce. Its worth a shot anyway. I do have tincture with the leaves working in the meantime. Thank you

Yeah a lot of this is experimentation. Try it both ways and see which one works better!

As a follow up, I ran into the same problem with the “stuffing” grape leaves. they are so thirsty I had to immediately go to 1:6 ratio but the next day everything was absorbed. Do I simply keep adding alcohol with these “thirsty” herbs and if so, do I then take more  of the tincture to get the same benefit or how does it affect dosing? Newbie here and very excited to figure this out!

Yep! Gotta make sure the herb keeps covered. I’ll come back and add a little bit more in the following days as needed. I used to try to keep to the right ratios, and ended up just going with the folk method for everything. And really, as for taking more, it’s going to come down to experimentation. Also, when it comes time to press the tincture, get some cheesecloth and one of those potato ricers and you’ll be able to get really good extraction out of it
