I am looking to purchase a Ginkgo tree. Doc Jones is saying that the female tree stinks so to get a male. We are looking but not having luck. We called a nursery we had found a ginkgo tree at and asked why they were not specific on male verses female.
        Here’s the answer we got…

the ginkgo tree is asexual meaning it’s both male and female at the same time (self pollinating).
In our research, we have read that ginkgo trees can change sex sometime in their lifetime. They said it was unclear of how and why they do that but that it can happen.

Totally confused on this purchase and don’t want to move forward until I can get some advice on it. Anyone have any advice for me?

          Hi Shelly,

Have you checked with Strictly Medicinal Seeds or  Companion Plants?

If you can, I’d purchase a Ginko tree from one of them. Both are happy to answer any questions that you may have prior to making a purchase, as well as afterward. I’ve ordered seeds / plants from both and have always been very happy with my purchases. (type either one of those names into the search engine that you use, and the website will come up.)

Best wishes in your pursuit of obtaining a Ginko tree.

Hello!  Not sure where you are from but I purchased a Ginko tree from a nursery here in SD.   I did not ask about male vs female as it is self pollinating.  Essentially both male and female.  Most trees have been cross pollinated in this way.  I am just glad my tree survived the cold winter!!  I would go the nursery route again. Good luck with your search!

How can I tell which sex my trees are?

I don’t -see where you’re at.  If Canadian & you’re on a tight budget, Richter’s Herbs in Ontario (they do mail to USA) will send you wee baby Gingko trees.  I thought mine had died last winter as we had a -43C week, so I ordered two replacements, only to have my original come back to life in summer.
