The product page lists the ingredients as: Brigham Tea, Mullein Leaf, Lobelia —

but the formula page in the class states: Brigham Tea, Gumweed, Lobelia

Confused – as usual.  You are such a patient man 😀

          Good catch. Thanks.

The Formula page was my old formula. I fixed it.

You can replace the gumweed with mullein in that formula.

I used to make it with gumweed but gumweed is a pain in the neck to tincture so I switched to Lobelia. My fingers were typing too fast for my brain to keep up.

Before I go and buy Gumweed seeds – could you please tell me why the gumweed is a pain to tincture?  Thanks!

Gumweed is very oily and sticky and a pain to grind and press.

Is it worse to press than the joint formula?  That one didn’t want to drip thru the hankie at all – but reluctantly let me squeeze it (thankfully since it’s such a nice formula for aches).  Is gumweed not worth growing and tincturing?

Gumweed is a wonderful herb with great properties. But like some other herbs, it’s a bit more aggravating to process (don’t even get me started on pressing comfrey tinctures!). Since I’m in a commercial situation making LOTS of tincture, gumweed isn’t a good fit. For what it’s doing in that particular formula, other more cooperative herbs were just as good so I switched.

Sorry for the additional question.  So instead of trying to dry the gumweed, is it easier and/or better to just tincture it fresh with a higher proof (and what would that need to be please)?  Which herbs do you find to be as good or better?  I chose gumweed simply because your video talked about how good it is AND “supposedly” deer and rabbits don’t like it, and it’s going where there is no fence and the plants are fair game!  Thank you in advance 🙂

Sharon, I LOVE gumweed, and NEED to have some on hand at all times, lol.  Yes, go ahead and tincture the gumweed fresh, in super high octane hooch – think Everclear, and give it a good, looong soak.  Even if you stick your gumweed in a paper sack and forget about it for three months (it might be pretty dry by then), I would still use at minimum 100 proof- and I have done so, with excellent results. And I didn’t bother trying to grind it up, either – I just stuffed the jar, using the “folk method” of measurement.  I gotta have my gumweed, lol.  Plants are sort of like cats – they choose you, not the other way round, lol.  Gumweed is my “pet cat” of the plant world.

Thanks “helpful Michelle”!  You always help out so much.  Everclear it shall be.  Sounds like you take about the top 1/3 of the plant with as many open flowers as possible, and in the process, you’ll get quite a few leaves along with the flowers.  I believe that I’ve read that both are the medicine?  As always, I appreciate your help!

Michelle got it exactly right. I love gumweed and if it was just for me, I’d use it all the time. But you can dry it for months and when you try to grind it it’s still an oily steamy mess. It’s hard on equipment and takes forever to clean up, so for my production purposes, it’s a pain in the neck.

That said, tincturing the way Michelle outlined is no trouble at all and a perfect fit for regular folks because it saves you the step of having to clean the Vita-mix blender when its’ covered with something with no respect whatsoever for soap and water. LOL

we were able to clean our blender with ever clear and it worked well

Yup. That works. I’ve also heard that freezing it before grinding makes it nicer.

I didn’t realize till today that gumweed is a biennial plant, and that I won’t get flowers the first year.  Are the leaves any good medicinally?

Sharon, the leaves have some, but the flowers are much better (and much easier to harvest, lol).  I also did not know that — I thought they were perennial, hmmm….

The Grindelia genus has some annuals and some perennials. I’m not aware of any biennial species in that genus. Mine (G. squarrosa) is perennial.

The flowers and buds, as Michelle said, are very much better medicinally than the leaves.

Erroneous information on the world wide wrong web strikes again.  Thanks for clarifying that it’s not biennial!
