Hello All, I have a close friend who has approached me about her inability to sleep.  She said it is really starting to effect her and asked for a natural sleep aid.  When I asked her about any medications she is taking she gave me a list and I am reluctant to give her anything with fear of interactions.  She is taking Hydrochlorothiazide, Buspirone and Alendronate sodium.  She has spoken with her physician who wants to put her on a sleeping pill but she doesn’t want to take a prescription sleeping pill. She says she just can’t shut off her brain at night.  Any safe suggestions?  Appreciate any help here, just learning so not comfortable just throwing out herb recommendations to her, but I want to help my friend who is really struggling if I can.

I would do some aromatherapy, something like diffusing essential oils or making a little bag of hops to keep by the pillow. Also, some deep breathing exercises can help. Sometimes when I find it hard to go to sleep, i just focus solely on my breathing until I fall asleep. I’ve also tried a technique where you visualize each of your muscles relaxing, start at your toes and work all the way up to the crown of your head. One other thing that I’ve heard help people is to keep a notepad nearby so you can write down all of your thoughts, so that way your brain can say ok I’m not going to forget this now and I’ll think about it tomorrow.

Hope some of these ideas help!

Those are great suggestions, thank you!  I have also spoken with her about meditation.  I know it helps me a great deal.  If she can learn to quiet her mind when she meditates, perhaps she will be able to do the same when she’s falling asleep.  I appreciate  the response and I will suggest those to her!

Thank you for that suggestion!  I will let her know to try that!

Aside from herbs I think that mega reduction in screen time is necessary. Calm classical music to replace it. An evening routine to get ready for bed, bath, tea. If she could get off her meds there are lots of alternatives.

I have had good success with people using Ashwaghanda and Scullcap for sleep issues. It really depends on why you are having problems. I have one client who has some nerve pain that wakes her and she finds that Scullcap relieves her nerve pain and she sleeps soundly. I have another client who just has anxiety and she finds Ashwaghanda does the trick. She also does some lemon balm.
