Thank you Doc for the youtube video on Thanksgiving herbs!  It was great. You said that sage is a short term medicine and then said to use it for a week. Could you explain the “why” behind this?

Some herbs are long-term tonics and some are short-term problem solvers. I wouldn’t worry a bit about using sage every day as part of a formula. But it does have some antibiotic effects that might beat up your good-guy gut bugs in large, prolonged doses. It also has some strong astringency that might make your guts grumpy or dry things up too much if used in high doses long term.

Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

Doc, since this thread is on sage, I have a few more sage questions:

Do you consider sage a strong cholagogue?

How effective of an emmenagogue is it?

What is sage’s action as a vulnerary?

Are the stems as medicinal as the leaves?

I know that if you heat sage you’ll lose essential oils. Other than that, are there other constituents that are damaged by heat?

Sage is a mild emmenagogue and cholegogue and a very mild vulnerary. There are stronger choices for all of those actions.

Leaves are much better than stems.
