I have an interesting case to share. I work as a palliative care NP. I consulted on a 78 yr old male with metastatic small cell carcinoma. He did a clinical trial at Cleveland Clinic that resulted in a total change in his taste of what he explains “extreme salty and buttery”. He tried B vitamins and zinc for two months with no improvement. I assume his chemo killed the surface of his tongue so as you can imagine this has severely affected his quality of life. I wish I had a suggestion for him and was thinking a calendula and comfrey cold infusion and have him drink/swish and swallow three times a day. I’m of course open to any suggestions. I will talk to him about comfrey but he has liver mets. He knows his time is limited so I suspect he would be willing to try the comfrey. I realize Doc doesn’t discuss castor oil but I’m considering anything that would help restore any new tissue.

If it’s a local mouth issue like that, he wouldn’t even need to swallow it. He could swish and spit. I have no idea if it’d help but tastebuds are pretty transient tissues and maybe they’d come back if they haven’t been replaced by scar tissue.

Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.
