Just a question, does he have obstructive or central sleep apnea? If it is obstructive I think that there is more you can do?If it is Central then a part of the brain that signals the breathing while they are sleeping is not working correctly? So there could be different issues going on. My husband has obstructive sleep apnea and so we raised the head of our bed, and decongestants help him, drying up the pathways, even sometimes sleeping in a recliner so his head is more elevated.

My mother on the other hand, has central sleep apnea, I think it is caused by her heavy use of pain killers, (92 years old with multiple medical issues) when she is sleeping under the dose of painkillers, she is so deeply asleep I think it affects her breathing.

So, although I am new here, I think knowing what kind of sleep apnea he has could help with an answer. Is he on any medications which could be affecting him?

Thank you Karen! I did not know that there were two different causes for sleep apnea. My mom suffers from this and is likely contributing to her resistant high blood pressure. I guess I need to find out if it is obstructive or central.

Obstructive sleep apnea is a mechanical problem. There isn’t an herb to fix that. I’ve had two surgeries to shorten my soft palate and still use a CPAP.

Sometimes weight loss can improve things. In my case it was all structural. I had it even as a skinny kid.

Sleep apnea is a serious thing. The brain is fond of oxygen. I’d encourage him to get to a doctor and get it addressed.

Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

My husband has sleep apnea and hates wearing a cpap too! His problem is that one sinus is always clogged. He tried a Navage to see if he could get any crud out it but the water won’t even go in that nostril. The water from the navage comes out his mouth – which it isn’t supposed to do. Is there anything we can do to open his sinus?

if the sinuses need clearing out, a little cayenne in the mouth will do the trick.
