Generally smoking is harmful but I don’t know if the smoke itself is harmful or if it’s what’s in it that is harmful, or both. We smoke mullein for medicinal purposes and does that mean the smoke that carries the medicine is harmless?

And with a lot of ideas on incense burning and smudging, I thought I should get some more info.

Is smoke itself damaging to the cilia or other parts of the lungs?

          Hi Annett,

I’m sorry I didn’t see this until now!

While I’m no expert by any means, I can tell you what I know: I know that often, a direct route is the best way to convey medicine, especially by inhalation for the respiratory system. I also know that there is valid concern that burned plant matter produces by-products that may be carcinogens. The question is whether the benefits outweigh the risks. For me personally, it has. But my use of an herbal cigarette has never been a daily thing, but in a time of acute need.

That being said, there are better ways! You may want to purchase a dry herb vaporizer. You simply load your dry herb into a tiny compartment, where it is heated and the moisture and goodness from the plant matter is extracted and released from the mouthpiece as a vapor, which you inhale as though sucking on a straw. It’s much gentler on the old pipes, your sputum won’t be brown, and it tastes better, more like a tea.

I don’t want to recommend any brands of vaporizer because of spam bots and trolls, but you can do a search. Make sure you specify dry herb. You don’t want the kind for oil cartridges.
