Has anyone heard of Snakeroot, Ageratina altissima? If so, what are uses for this and do you know of any look alikes that are dangerous?

I would be so happy if it were medicinal or edible!  I just identified it in my yard this spring.  It was quite the surprise when I dug my pitchfork in and found I had impaled a snake….Oh My.  It really was quite hilarious!  I admit though, I really love how it grows, tall and strong!

          I’m glad you asked 🙂

I think it’s poisonous, unfortunately. But that is funny that you dug into a snake around snakeroot. What a coincidence.

It’s used in several herbal applications.  Rootbuyer.com from Bloomington Indiana will buy the harvested root.   The milk from cows who eat it is poison.    Its main use today is as an expectorant in cough syrups, teas, and lozenges, and as a gargle for sore throats. It has also been used in larger doses as an emetic and cathartic.
