I’ve gathered a few comments that Doc Jones has made in the past regarding treating shingles and the resulting pain.  I’ll quote them, with my question in bold afterwards.  Hopefully this will be helpful to others as well as myself/hubby.

“Calendula topically and internally. I would try lemon balm too.  Chamomile, valerian, skullcap and St. John’s could all be used to help with pain.” So Calendula both topical and oral, but what about the others listed here – are they also both?

IdahoHerbalist said “Look at our Calm and Collected formula” (which is Lemon Balm, Lobelia, SJW Flower, & Valerian – named above).  Same question, but since they are combined into one blend – topical, oral, or both?

“I’d recommend these two in combination.  INFXN-HRPEZE to knock down the virus a bit AND Rest Easy to help with the pain.”  Topical, oral, or both?

Regarding Teasel: “I’m sure it would help the pain as would many other things (try hops or skullcap topically). There are also herbs with antiviral activity specifically to herpes viruses (shingle is Herpes zoster) like Calendula and lemon balm that would be good too topically and internally. They won’t eliminate herpes permanently but will knock it back.”  Ok, so all those are topical or oral, but we didn’t state which on Teasel.  Is there a limit on how much/often you could use the oral remedies?  I’m wondering about interactions with other herbs/tonics one might be taking also.  Would you recommend using most if not all of all of these tinctures mentioned above at the same time?  And would a tincture topically sting or hurt badly?  Maybe tea would be better topically, and if so, how strong would you make it (or them if combining several herbs into one topical tea)?

If there are any other herbs/tinctures that would be really good for shingles that are not mentioned above, please add them (and how to use them) to this post please?  Thanks much!

Sharon, As far as tinctures being used topically and being worried about it stinging, Dr. Jones has diluted certain tinctures as follows: One teaspoon of the tincture to two to four ounces of sterile water. He does this with open wounds when using the poultice tincture.

As far as oral vs topically: I know that if a person is on pharmaceuticals and cant take things orally, then topically could work depending on what you are using of course.

I am not here to answer your questions, I am just throwing out some ideas that I myself am learning about regarding some of the questions you have had.

Thanks Jean – I had forgotten about the tincture in water thing!

Sydnia – I see that you used the comfrey and cayenne as a salve (ouch!).  What was your ratio of the two herbs and what oil did you use?  I’m wondering if that combination for the comfrey and cayenne as a topical spray would have been as effective.  So happy to hear how fast it all healed up!

great questions, looking forward to seeing the feedback – i believe these are oral and topical ( topical diluted with water) i used a comfrey and cayenne salve for shingles recently  ( it was at a very ugly, bumpy and scared state) within a few days all of the bumps and scars were gone.

I’m inclined to say using topically is important due to the local reaction you want. Because the virus lives and manifests in the nerves, I tend to lean towards topical many times per day.
